Both men and women produce testosterone and it is not only produced in the testes in men but also the adrenal glands. Women produce testosterone as well as estrogen in their ovaries and adrenal glands as well and it should be noted that men also produce estrogen to a certain extent as well. Protein synthesis is the process by which the testosterone is used to build muscle and will be briefly explained in this article.

The amount of testosterone released for muscle protein synthesis and growth is dependent upon a number of factors. When we do resistance training more testosterone will be released if the resistance training focuses on large muscle groups, heavy weight loads or intensity. A resistance training program of low intensity will result in less production of testosterone and therefore less muscle growth than in a high-intensity, resistance-training workout.

This is an important consideration when planning your workouts as you will need to increase the amount of intensity that you do your workouts as you progress. It is this progressive resistance that will steadily increase the rate at which the protein synthesis in your body works after your workouts are complete.

Weight training and other strenuous physical activities trigger muscle growth by causing small amounts of trauma to the muscles themselves. In response to this stimulus, the body adapts by repairing the muscular tissue and increasing its strength and size by adding new protein strands to muscle fibers. This is what is known as protein synthesis, and it is modulated by a variety of hormones called growth factors, of which testosterone is one of the most important.

Testosterone directly affects muscle growth by binding to receptors on the surface of muscle cells and amplifying the biochemical signals in muscle tissue that result in protein synthesis. Although there are other growth factors like HGH (human growth hormone) they are similar to testosterone, growth hormone also increases protein synthesis and can result in increased muscle growth.

By boosting protein synthesis in skeletal muscle, testosterone increases both the rate and extent to which muscles adapt to exercise. By amplifying the release of other growth factors such as growth hormone, testosterone also facilitates the process of protein synthesis in general. To benefit from testosterone's role in muscle growth, focus on heavy weight loads, low repetitions and multiple sets of each exercise.

You will need to target the specific muscle groups at least two days per week and focus on the large muscles of the legs, back, chest and core to produce higher levels of testosterone. The production of testosterone during your workout leaves testosterone circulating after your workout and increases your chances of muscle hypertrophy, or growth.
