Although testosterone is a hormone made by the body it is also manufactured in the adrenal glands and is the only anabolic steroid manufactured by the body. Humans make testosterone in their adrenal glands and testicles and ovaries in women but all animals also manufacture testosterone. The purpose of this vital hormone is the following:

Maintain reproductive tissues

Stimulate sperm production

Stimulate and maintain sexual function

Increase muscle mass and strength

Maintain bone strength

Just like your cholesterol or blood pressure, there is a numerical range of testosterone levels (also known as T levels) that are considered normal. The brain and the testicles work together to keep testosterone in this range. When levels of testosterone are below normal, the brain signals the testicles to make more.

In men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testis and prostate as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle, bone mass, and the growth of body hair. In addition, testosterone is essential for health and well-being as well as the prevention of osteoporosis.

The plasma concentration of testosterone is about 7-8 times as great as the concentration of adult human females' plasma. Because the metabolic consumption of testosterone in males is greater, the daily production is about 20 times greater in men. The result is that females are a lot more sensitive to any addition of testosterone, whether they produce it themselves or from steroids.

In the study of the evolution of testosterone scientists have discovered that it is very specific and very predictable when plotting the evolutionary growth of a species for example. It could be described as the key to all life and the reason that we are able to continue functioning and repair from the daily damage that we do to ourselves every day.

For example after you exercise and you need then rest your HGH (human growth hormone) and testosterone is the reason we are able to get that repair done. This means that after we have trained we will be putting on more muscle when we sleep and rest than when we train as we are only breaking the muscle when we train.

As mentioned above the levels of testosterone that your body produces is very specific and will range from person to person very slightly. But the point is that this small variation can make a huge difference in your ability to repair after exercise. Taking anabolic steroids causes many problems as your own testosterone production starts to shut down.

But besides the well documented facts on the dangers of taking anabolic steroids, something that many of these steroid takers see is an increase in the ability of the body to repair itself after training. The complex interaction of this vitally important hormone is something that one should not mess with as it can cause a wide range of side effects.
